A Hymn to the Queer Fish
Death as both exposition and dénouement, The Elegance of the Hedgehog unveils us the story of Madam Michelle and Monsieur Ozu under Paloma’s camera. Paloma is this girl who delicately designs her suicide and films the “goldfish-like” life around. Monsieur Ozu got acquainted with Madam Michelle, the concierge, through Tolstoy’s best known work Anna Karenina. Disregarding the ossified social strata, he asked Madame Michelle out to dinner which gave her the esteem and the courage to love again. To dinner with Monsieur Ozu, she lent the dress of a dead wealthy woman from the laundry house and was later ironically kicked and killed by the laundry car. What matters is not when to die but what you are doing when you are half way into the grave. At the end of the movie, it said like this " she died at the very moment to embrace love".
Losing so many valuable details, previous is the basic introduction of this movie. It is a hymn to all these Queer Fish, which in Dostoyevsky’s work the White Nights means “A ridiculous man, a man unlike others.” And from Paloma, Madame Michelle and Monsieur Ozu reflects 3 different Queer Fish’s way to appreciate and accept the world.
Paloma is this girl who delicately designs her suicide on her 16th birthday and films the “goldfish-like” life around.
Being different from her families, the melancholic mother, the workaholic father, and the sister who is always trying so hard to trudge, to win by kicking all the competitors into formidable abyss. Their lives are trapped in the cursed loop, alone in the goldfish bowl for there is even no mutual understanding. The only way to be exposed to the fresh air is floating on the water surface, being dead and unconscious.
Paloma takes determinism the most objectively and rejects the possibility that man can be liberated and live out their true self. The absurdity of life is to discover your self-deception, divulge the incroyable distance between the past and future, the familiar and the strange, Paloma believed life has come to its dead end when it confronted with absurdity so the answer is crystal clear, suicide. But to commensurate with her short life, she decided to shot a film reflecting the people enslaving themselves to the goldfish bowl.
Paloma: “I just want to seek some tranquility here at your place.”
Madam Michelle: “Can’t you find it at your own home?”
Paloma: “Non, I used to hide every places at home conceivable but now all my secret bases have been discovered.”
She is too young to hide herself properly in the crowd, unable to tranquil herself with people she dislikes and tolerate them. I am now at this stage. Just beginning to be aware of the people around and understand them, I persuade myself by murmuring “people are multifarious”. Though totally agree with Pessoa’s view that “different me resides in the same physical me”, I cannot help myself detest some facets of myself and other people.
The concierge, Madam Michelle, stout, ugly, taciturn, bad-tempered, keeping a fat cat whose pawls would smell in its bad mood, leaving the television on all the time for people’s contempt, dressed in the slovenest way with hair all messed up, she conformed to people’s recognition of a concierge best. However, behind the negligible door, here is her hiding place, the pettiest room surrounded with books. “I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.” (Borges, Library of Babel) I once read a sentence wrote by Maya Angelou saying that “the library is the rainbow in the cloud. It helps you to see, not only that you are not alone, but that you are not really different from everyone else. There may be details that are different but a human being is a human being.”
She is a dreamer, which in Dostoyevsky’s the White Nights means “strange people live in the corner, not a human being but a creature of an intermediate sort.” “For the most part he settles in some inaccessible corner, as though hiding from the light of the day; once he slips into his corner, he grows to it like a snail, or, anyway, he is in that respect very much like that remarkable creature, which is an animal and a house both at once, and is called a tortoise.” The books build her fortress against the outside, create a fascinating internal world and give her the elegance to achieve inner balance. Junichiro Tanizaki accompanied her on the stage in which the author imagines himself to be a cat. If he wants to remain with himself, a wag of tail can keep all the visitors away.
Savage on the outside, civilized in the inside, she is a cat live in solitude, elegant, graceful and mysterious. Concierge is her camouflage, carefree, detached, isolated, uninterrupted, the best hidden place as praised by Paloma. “I want to be a concierge in the future!”
However, she died most ironically in the fateful shackle of social strata when embracing love. as Camus said in the Myth of Sisyphus, “What is called a reason for living is also an excellent reason for dying.” We die the pettiest death, which incarnates the most grandeur paradox. Here, the initiation of a love bodes ill for a nascent death. A flip pf mind, a blink of eye, the sound, the gesture, the figure, the face collapses all of a sudden.
We need to learn about how to die. Chinese essayist Liu Liangcheng once wrote like this “we need to learn about how to bereave and how to hold a funeral.” The Hour explains that Virginia Woolf arranges the death to teach others the essence of living. In Tolstoy’s the Death of Ivan Lynch, as he lay dying, screeching and screaming, people around still feel nothing. Even the saint’s body smells as in Brother Karamazov, it takes efforts and courage to live while being aware of the paradox.
Monsieur Ozu got acquainted with Madam Michelle through Tolstoy’s best known work Anna Karenina (my canon at Senior 3), “happy families are all alike, every unhappy family is unhappy in their own way.”
But the author implied here that all the families are unhappy. It is not a statement of pessimism. All the families that seem happy are happy in the same way, rich, educated, civilized, with lovely children and caring parents. But the tragedies lurking are on all the time. his cats are called Kitty and Levine while Madame Michelle’s cat is called Leon, both of them love Tolstoy. They watched Yasujiro Ozu’s movie together, which is about the breakdown of a seemingly happy family. Maybe maybe, in Anna Karenina and the Munekata Sisters, by extreme love, the author sees the possibility to tear the cursed loop and crash the translucent goldfish bowl, the possibility to live oneself out now.
Madame Michelle dies the luckiest death. Savoring the love equivalent from Monsieur Ozu and harvesting the natural happiness from reading, she had her life commensurate.
