  《What Technology Wants》

  ●kk tech

●another great book from Kelly beside "Out of Control"

  《What Technology Wants》

  http://dongxi.net/b13WY

《What Technology Wants》读后感(三):A simple introduction to find out if you would like to read further in the book

This book defies easy summary. One touching fact about this book is that Mr. Kelly is not a fanatical theorist, preaching abstract concepts without anybody even know what it is. His ideas and perception have strong support from his own rich experiences. I'd like to give overview of his life with technology in first part of this book.

Mr. Kelly reviews his 8-year life in remote parts of Asia in cheap sneakers and worn jeans and the following 5000-mile meander across the American continent by inexpensive bicycle. The highlight of the bicycling was the encounter with Amish communities. He finds he shares one common feature with those in Asia and Amish communities--the state of minimal technology.

He later became fascinated by the challenge of picking tools that might elevate his spirit.Though he served as editor for several magazines and run websites about selecting tools and technologies, he was still the one with limited belongings and the last in his circle to get the latest must-have gadget.

Then he acknowledged his contradictory relationship with technology, which brought his questions. As he put, our lives today are strung with profound and constant tension between the virtues of more technology and personal necessity of less: Should I get my kid this gadget? Do I have time to master this labor-saving device? And more deeply: What is this technology taking over my life? What is this global force that elicits both our love and repulsion ? How should we approach it? Can we resist it, or is each and every new technology inevitable? Does the relentless avalanche of new things deserve my support or my skepticism --- and will my choice even matter?

If you ever suffer from similar contradictions and questions, then you probably need some answers to guide you through this technological dilemma. This book may help; )

  《What Technology Wants》

  “What?“

《What Technology Wants》读后感(五):50% On the relationship between technium's evolution and human being's oppression

I'd say Unabomber's view on the relationship between technium's evolution and human being's oppression is indeed futuristic and eye-opening. In contrast, the author's counter argument seems relatively week and a bit elusive.

The deduction of human being's oppression as a result of technium's evolution appears logical and natural. With the intelligence and complexity of the technium increasing exponentially, a point would be reached that all decisions would have been taken away from human beings because the incomprehensible nature of the technium would make human being's decisions useless. To prevent the gloomy future, many anarcho primitivists proposed to collapse the modern civilization based on industrial societies entirely. The author refuted the proposal by basically saying that there is also no future even if we go back to the primitive state with zero technology and the author stopped there. So we are left with no choice but to march into the dark future awaiting us?

I doubt so. Neither the unabomber nor the author recognized that the magnitudes of existence of the technium and human beings are different thus the wants and desires from both parties might not even be in the same dimension. Without direct conflicts of interest, why would human beings must be exploited or oppressed for the survival or development of the technium? The author himself said that the relationship between human beings and the technium is symbiotic, which essentially means both parties gain from this relationship. It is perfectly possible for technium to grant more degrees of freedom to human beings while the results produced by human beings fulfilling the technium's wants at the same time. This relationship is similar to that between us and some micro organism that could produce gas. We provide them with food while our need of energy is fulfilled by their existence. However, our need remains incomprehensible to them in this symbiotic relationship in a similar way technium's wants remains mysterious to us. A bigger challenge is to make sense of us as being inside the more encompassing technium rather than pondering on the artificial divide between human beings and the technium (which should be seen as the extension of our life)

Just to finish off, the chapter on the Unabomber is really interesting and worth reading.
