《The Return of the King》

  《The Return of the King》是一本由J.

  《The Return of the King》

●Still round the corner there may wait, A new road or a secret gate; And though I oft have passed them by, A day will come at last when I, Shall take the hidden paths that run, West of the moon, east of the sun.

●Epic, engrossing, nonetheless certain portions appear drab.

  ●my beloved

  《The Return of the King》

Aragon, the King of Man。

The Lady of Rohan, Sam和 Rose,不过故事好棒。

  《The Return of the King》

  《The Return of the King》读后感(三):“Ónen i-Estel Edain, ú-chebin estel anim(我将希望留给杜内丹人,自己则毫无保留)。

  《The Return of the King》读后感(四):Legolas

  1016

Legolas stood before the gate and turned his bright eyes away north and east, and his fair face was troubled.

  1023

quot;I also will come," said Legolas, "for I do not fear the Dead."

  1029

The Company halted, and there was not a heart among them that did not quail, unless it were the heart of Legolas of the Elves, for whom the ghosts of Men have no terror.

ut Arod, the horse of Rohan, refused the way, and he stood sweating and trembling in a fear that was grievous to see. Then Legolas laid his hand on his eyes and sang some words that went soft in the gloom, until he suffered himself to be led, and Legolas passed in.

  1032

Legolas turning to speak to Gimli looked back and the Dwarf saw before his face the glitter in the Elf's bright eyes.

quot; The Dead are following," said Legolas. "I see shapes of Men and of horses, and pale banners like shreds of cloud, and spears like winter-thickets on a misty night. The Dead are following."

  1141

Together the Elf and the Dwarf entered Minas Tirith, and folk that saw them pass marvelled to see such companions; for Legolas was fair of face beyond the measure of Men, and he sang an elven-song in a clear voice as he walked in the morning.

  1143

quot;Look!" he cried. "Gulls! They are flying far inland. A wonder they are to me and a trouble to my heart. Never in all my life had I met them, until we came to Pelargir, and there I heard them crying in the air as we rode to the battle of the ships. Then I stood still, forgetting war in Middle-earth; for their wailing voices spoke to me of the Sea. The Sea! Alas! I have not yet beheld it. But deep in the hearts of all my kindred lies the sea-longing, which it is perilous to stir. Alas! for the gulls. No peace shall I have again under beech or under elm."

  1149

(Gimli) "For my part, like Merry, I wish that with our victory the war was now over. Yet whatever is still to do, I hope to have a part in it, for the honour of the folk of the Lonely Mountain."

quot; And I for the folk of the Great Wood," said Legolas, "and for the love of the Lord of the White Tree."

  1210

(An Orc) "first they say it's a great Elf in bright armour."

  1252

quot; And I," said Legolas, "shall walk in the woods of this fair land, which is rest enough. In days to come, if my Elven-lord allows, some of our folk shall remove hither; and when we come it shall be blessed, for a while. For a wile: a month, a life, a hundred years of Men. But Anduin is near, and Anduin leads down to the Sea. To the Sea!

To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying,

The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying.

West, west away, the round sun is falling.

Grey ship, grey ship, do you hear them calling.

The voices of my people that have gone before me?

  I will leave, I will leave the woods that bore me;

For our days are ending and our years failing.

I will pass the wide waters lonely sailing.

Lone are the waves on the Last Shore falling,

weet are the waves on the Last Isle calling,

In Eressla, in Elveshome that no man can discover,

Where the leaves fall not: land of my people for ever!"

And so singing Legolas went away down the hill.

  1281

Then Legolas repaid his promise to Gimli and went with him to the Glittering Caves; and when they returned he was silent, and would say only that Gimli alone could find fit words to speak of them. "And never before has a Dwarf claimed a victory over an Elf in a contest of words," said he. "Now let therefore let us go to Fangorn and set the score right!"

  1284

ut all save Legolas said that they must now take their leave and depart either south or west. "Come, Gimli!" said Legolas. "Now by Fangorn's leave l will visit the deep places of the Entwood and see such trees as are nowhere else to be found in Middle-earth. You shall come with me and keep your word; and thus we will journey on together to our own lands in Mirkwood and beyond." To this Gimli agreed, though with no great delight, it seemed.

  1419

Legolas his friend also brought south Elves out of Greenwood, and they dwelt in Ithilien, and it became once again the fairest country in all the westlands.

ut when King Elessar gave up his life Legolas followed at last the desire of his heart and sailed over Sea.

We have heard that Legolas took Gimli Gloin's son with him because of their great friendship, greater than any that has been between Elf and Dwarf.

  1443

Then Legolas built a grey ship in Ithilien, and sailed down Anduin and so over Sea; and with him, it is said, with Gimli the Dwarf. And when that ship passed an end was come in Middle-earth of the Fellowship of the Ring.

《The Return of the King》读后感(五):There and back again. The legend of “the Lord of the Rings”

Theme : fate, evil and good, conflict, responsibility ,growth, faith, journey, nostalgia, friendship

The story is written in English; so I decided that English, no matter how poorly I command it, should this review be written in.

Where to begin? I can almost imagine the immense difficulty Bilbo and Frodo faced when they were trying to compile the red book. And instead of the writerblock of those who create fantasy based on their bleak daily life, they face another sort of obstacle in their writing. They have gone through so many stories; there are so many to tell that they do not know which one to start. Where to begin for such a glandulous journey so rich, so deep and so beautifully written.

erhaps, from “journey” I should start with. Journey is one of the most prominent themes of the entire trilogy. Or it can be even dated back to the “prologue “-- “the Hobbits”, when Bilbo set off from complacent Shire. The fellowship shared a physical journey; from east to the west, a journey crosses the entire landscape of the middle earth, of which Tolkien never tired of pumping in delicately woven and, quite often found by unfavourable readers, meticulous details From unconquerable mountains to untameable rivers, from stygian Moria mines to sunlit Lothlorien and Rivendell, that reminds us of a memory of lost paradise. Unique species and folks are found in their own realms. Each has their distinguished appearance, language, customs and retrievable history. From Tolkien’s untiring description, one can see, and even hear or feel a brave new world unfold in front her eyes, provided that the reader has a rather good sense of direction, a competent amount of vocabularies, and the ability to visualise of course. All these made the reading experience extremely enchanting and enthralling. (I am pretty sure they have lessened the workload of script writers for the movies too.) More importantly, they add up to a rare sense of realism of such a fantasy fiction. Few modern fantasy writers can surpass the achievement of Tolkien in terms of his world view; both on a micro and a macro prospective, taken care of with unbelievable rigour.

However, the story is certainly more than just an adventure of physical excitement. It is also a journey of countless setbacks and perils, a journey of heart. And there is probably more to sympathise with for an ordinary read like me within all these struggles of mind, these loves and hates, these hopes and despairs, than the technical mastery of linguistic and historical intelligence of the writer. (You know that I am referring to the Quenya language and the folklore, don’t you? ) The actual journey has hence become a symbolic image that represents the life itself. And this is the part where fate, evil and good, conflict, responsibility, growth, nostalgia and all the tags that you may wish to associate with the book may came in.

As a wayfarer myself, I would like to talk about nostalgia before all. There are two types of nostalgia in LOTR. One is, again, the more apparent one, the homesickness of a traveller. Another is often seen in a modern dweller after the industrial revolution, a wistful outlook on life before the mechanics became so prevalent in our life. Shire represents the hometown of both types of nostalgias. It is both the sweet home for the hobbits, and an idea idyllic farming village. Similarly, Hobbits symbolise both children and the innocence of mankind.

tarting with the pure nostalgia itself, Home is the place to return to by definition. Many leave their home in a wish to come back better or to make their home better. That is also the case for our little Hobbits, though it is not completely their initial intention. However, the further you go, the more you start to fret about what would happen at home. You worry that what you are doing cannot protect your home at all because you do not know what is happening there. Even with communication being so convenient today, you still cannot know well enough once you are out of the place, least to say the Hobbits in the book. You start to worry that home will change, in a negative way, but often forgetting that you have changed much yourself too. This can be seen most evidently when Frodo and Sam were amongst the most perilous part of their journey, right there into Mordor. And when one finally do get back, with all the wistfulness to find familiarity again after tired of unpredictability of the journey, the result is often disappointing. The place once so familiar may inevitably become strange to you, even if it has stayed much the same.(which is not so much of the case in the book anyway) Uncanny, in German they call it; home but quite unlike home, one of the most frightening things that can happen, lying deep in our brains and nerves. And that is the extreme form of nostalgia. Even you have finally made it back physically, you dire wish can never be fulfilled. Luckily, Tolkien was not cruel enough to make this happen, at least not so except for poor Mr. Frodo. As a firm preacher of “hope”, he did not “kill” Shire. Of course, being realistic as he was, there were changes, much unpleasant ones. But within a short time, our four fellows brought back orders and life in Shire became even better than when they left it. Yet some changes in the traveller himself can hardly be altered. “Some pain cannot be healed”, as Frodo put it across himself. It must be extremely sad for him to realise this. Because once you admit that, you have conceded that you have to cut off from the safe “womb”. There is no going back. You will be a forever exile. Thinking of all these, I saw Frodo leaving for the Gray Heaven. Tears misted my eyes.

For the first type of nostalgia, the idea of hometown can be extended into childhood itself. The departing from home, or journey, in today’s context, does not usually start in one’s childhood when one is too weak. Once you are on the road, the experiences during the journey will make a traveller grow, prompting him to wave goodbyes to the innocent and inexperienced childhood to step into the maturity of adulthood. After passing through some of the toughest ordeals of life and death on their journey, it is no wonder that even Gandalf claimed the Hobbit children “have now grown up” and are expected to shoulder the share of responsibility to manage their own country on their own. It is a positive thing to grow, to become more powerful and wiser. Yet inevitably one will start to miss the good old days. As nostalgia happens when you desire something in the past that cannot be retrieved at present and unrecoverable childhood certainly qualifies for a trigger for nostalgia.

Well, it is time for something light-hearted. Friendship is the best cure for nostalgia. It often comes to my mind that what would happen if Sam was not with Frodo on the road. Things would have been very different, won’t they? It is such a fortunate thing to have a friend by your side, who may not be able to share your sorrow but can share your tears, who may not be able to share your pain, but can share you with his/her shoulder.

After a pause, I suddenly do not feel like talking much about the nostalgia for country life. Howard Shore’s composition for the movie was fabulous. “Concerning Hobbits” depicted Hobbits’ 淳朴善良 so well. One who has always lived in such a peace may take it for granted. But the warriors will smile from deepest of their hearts with even a glance at Shire, because they know better than anyone else, how precious the tranquillity of such a simple life and its simple joy can be. I did not quite understand this when I was younger. Yes, young people, living in the safe cradle, yearn for exciting adventures. We miss what we have lost. All I want to say is that I totally share with your feeling, Mr. Tolkien. And I wish I can be one of the rangers, who use their hands to protect the last paradise in middle earth. No, I think I am digressing myself. Seeing my own hometown being modernised, I feel mournful. At one hand, I do wish it to prosper. But deep in my heart, how I wish the nature can be reserved and the simplicity of the village life can be maintained.

There is hardly any absolute evil and good in the whole story, even the ring itself. Gandalf the wise told Frodo to pity Gollum, for even within him he saw light used to glitter which may be rekindled one day. We judge too often and punish too hastily. Yet I think the religionists get it right. Many times, human eyes are so myopic and it is really not of us to judge.

Responsibility and fate are another theme for the story. Frodo, Aragorn and Gandalf, each has his own fatal responsibility but among all, Frodo was the most special one because he represented the discussion of freewill. (Of course, not to forget that Theoden and Denetor were also a good pair of analogy used to demonstrate this idea) We can argue that Frodo’s fate has been prewritten since the day Bilbo picked up the ring. Yet he had too many chances to run away from his doomed fate of being the ring bearer. He tried to escape indeed. He wanted to pass the ring to Gandalf, or to Bunbaldo, to the elves and even Faramir. That is exactly what most us do when we are faced with responsibility that seems too hard to bear for ourselves; we wish someone stronger can take it over from us. But it seemed that in the end Frodo realised, what I would like to call as “epiphany” or “growth”, that this is his own fate and he should be responsible of it. Notice that he was not forced to volunteer at the conference of Rivendell. The situation prompted him to do so. But eventually it was his own will that made the decision. And that, made all the difference. We all encounter unpredictable and unavoidable conundrums in our life. To brave it or to run away is our own choice. Perhaps that is one of the important characteristics that define us as humans. (Matrix provides a different argument. It suggested that the world is programmed to make us think we had the freedom to make the decision but it was actually not so. Anyway, that is another long story.) Similarly, Aragorn’s fate was even more prescribed. He struggled long before making his decision too, well, at least for the Aragorn depicted in the movie. His hesitation saved him from being a flat hero. And he perfectly resembles the idea”天将降大任于是人也,必将苦其心志,劳其筋骨,饿其体肤,空乏其身。”

Gandalf’s withdraw from interfering kind of resembles the idea that “God is dead” and people should manage themselves. Yes it again collaborated that Tolkien believed firmly in humanity. So did Gandalf. That is why he had always had hope. Yes, a fool’s hope. But you have to hope on. A life without hope is not worth living, isn’t it?
