三代人的中，最有意思的是初代故事。 建国的爷爷，是德国小镇酿酒师家族的第十个儿子（这家好多小孩......）。
建国的爷爷16岁独自闯荡移民熔炉纽约，在贫民窟曼哈顿靠理发赚下第一桶金。
23岁进军西雅图，在沙龙、赌场和妓院的包围中经营“提供综合性服务”的餐厅。
他追随矿工脚步向北进山，在死马的路边卖马肉汉堡，在贫民区继续开设“提供综合性服务”的饭店。
在美国西北部最后的拓荒大潮中，建国的爷爷完成了财富的积累。 “衣锦还乡”（准确说是衣锦还国）后，娶了贫穷美丽的邻家女孩（估计从小就打了心思？）。
