Feminism in Dracula
In Victorian age, women are forced to play the role of a good mother, a submissive wife, a lovely sister, while men could do pretty much everything. In the end of 19th century, however, women start to realize gender inequality and fight for it.
We have two lovely heroines in this book: Lucy & Mina. Similarities between these two women are salient. They are charming, beautiful, considerate people of noble nature, as well as engaged with Alpha male character. They are bitten by Count Dracula, suffering from his evilness. Such akin figures, however, ended up in extremely different finale, which lead us to their imparity.
Mina, praised by Dr. Van Helsing as “with heart of women and brain of men”, has survived the tragedy. She save Lucy once during the poor girl’s sleepwalking, and make enormous efforts during the battle to bring down Count Dracula. Nay, the same person take the responsibility, from Ms. Westenra, to guard her friend during the night when no man’s around. Doesn’t she look like a surrogate husband to Lucy?
While Lucy is traditional, submissive as well as contradictory .”I suppose that we women are such cowards that we think a man will save us from fears, and we marry him” (Chapter 5, Letter, Lucy to Mina, 24 May)” And women, I am afraid, are not always quite as fair as they should be (same letter) “Why can’t they let a girl marry three men” (same letter, this become true metaphorically in latter). Aforementioned thoughts indicate that she knew something about gender inequality, nonetheless couldn’t free herself from it,which leads to her death, carrying out by her own fiancé. Because in a patriarchal society, women will be cruelly executed if she “cross the line”.
We could easily perceive the sprout of feminism in Dracula, yet it is not mature. It won’t be widely accepted until decades later
